The Awesome Women of Twitter, better known as ‘AWOT’, has announced the launch of its new community blog, Team AWOT.
In its first fortnight it has published a number of notable stories, including two anonymous posts about rape (following the Unilad debacle), a story about street harassment and an account of one woman’s experiences as a stripper. The blogs have drawn a keen audience already and the site has attracted over 2,000 unique visitors since its launch on 2nd February.
“The blog is an extended part of the group conversation,” explains Ashley Fryer, who founded the network. “AWOT started because there’s this extraordinary community of women on Twitter, who’ve really become part of each other’s lives. In a way, the awesome women of Twitter have always existed – we’ve just put a name on it and moved it into the real world.
“Twitter has become a platform for people to share their experiences, and the blog is an extension of that. No subject will ever be taboo and our anonymous posters are using the community to shed light on topics that are rarely talked about. It’s important for women to be able to talk about the things that they’ve done or the things that have happened to them. AWOT is a chance to voice your opinions to an audience who’s really listening.”
AWOT, which started at the end of 2011, made headlines in December when the bar that was to host its first social gathering reneged its booking on the grounds that holding a feminist meeting in its establishment would be inappropriate. They have since found a new home at Liberty Lounge in Spitalfields, and will have their next gathering on 8th March. All women are welcome to attend. You can find the new community blog here.
