Gay Brazilian Man Wins 'Maternity' Leave

Written by

A man in Brazil has been granted a four-month "maternity" leave for a child he and his civil partner adopted. Lucimar da Silva has been allowed to take four months off work rather than five-day paternity leave.

Brazil's social security agency has agreed with the men that it would be discriminatory if one of them was not granted the time off. Lucimar da Silva will now take the longer leave offered.

Brazil's supreme court ruled that same-sex partners were entitled to every legal right enjoyed by heterosexual couples in 2011.
