Popular holiday destination for gay and lesbian travellers, the Florida Keys & Key West are exhibiting at Brighton & Hove Pride 2013 this Saturday, 3 August 2013.

In keeping with Pride’s Gay Icon theme this year, the Florida Keys are to celebrate their very own icon, “Sushi,” the islands’ best-known drag queen. For the past 10 years, Sushi has been featured on CNN’s international New Year’s Eve coverage for the “red shoe drop,” a takeoff on New York City’s famed ball drop, marking the arrival of the new year in Key West by descending in a 6-foot red, sparkling high-heeled shoe in the heart of the Keys’ gay scene on Duval Street.

This year, those at Brighton & Hoves’ Preston Park event can celebrate the icon that is Sushi by posing for photographs inside the “Sushi Glitter Shoe.” Visitors will also spot the massive glittery heel in the main parade.

Those posing for pictures in the high heel are to receive a picture as a memento and it will be displayed in a special gallery online at They will also be entered into a competition to win a holiday to the Florida Keys and meet Sushi herself. The prize includes two return flights with British Airways to Miami, the gateway to the Keys, and 3-4 nights’ accommodation in an LGBT guesthouse in the Keys.

Representatives of the Florida Keys are to be available on the stand with information about Sushi and the Keys’ gay scene, with brochures and an exclusive discounted offer to the Florida Keys with British Airways.

The Florida Keys boast a lively gay scene and an array of LGBT events including the upcoming Womenfest Key West and June’s Key West Pride, where in 2003 a 2km-long rainbow flag was unfurled along the entire length of Duval Street to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the pride rainbow flag.

Earlier this year, the Florida Keys also exhibited at London Pride for the first time.
