This Is Gonna Sound A Bit Gay

Current TVOnly half a century ago it was illegal to be gay in Britain.

Yet today Britain has become one of the most progressive, open-minded nations in the world. Civil partnerships and same sex adoptions no longer invoke the same level of controversy.  But what does it mean to be gay and lesbian at the end of the noughties?

Coinciding with London Pride this July, This Is Gonna Sound A Bit Gay is a celebration of sexual identity and an insight into gay rights in 21st Century Britain. With civil rights strengthened and the ongoing debate around nature vs. nurture prevailing, how have our attitudes towards homosexuality and the connotations attached to it changed? Have the social barriers fallen or does prejudice and division still stand? This one-off special airs exclusively on Thursday 2nd July.

FREE FILM SCREENING: Beyond the Pink Curtain
Homophobia remains an institutional practice in post-Communist Europe, as evidenced by Lithuania's introduction of legislation akin to Britain's defunct Section 28.

This is despite that country's membership of the European Union and the expectation of a commitment to its ethos of social equality.

Beyond the Pink Curtain is a documentary that highlights the problems faced in the East, while questioning the West's authority to pass judgment and investigating the power and responsibility of the European Union to protect us.  It features activists from Lithuania, Serbia, Poland, the UK and pan-European NGOs, and interviews with members of the far Right in Serbia.

Big Brother's Charlie Up For Gay Relationship

Big Brother Charlie
Gay Big Brother housemate Charlie Drummond has said he would pursue a relationship with a man in the BB house if someone suitable entered.

Former Mr Gay UK finalist said it would be great if there was a gay relationship this year. He commented, "Can you imagine that? It'll be groundbreaking."

However Charlie said that he would like to have a relationship in the house but there is no-one that he could be serious with.

He added, "There's people in the house that I would go with and shag and stuff, even after a drunk, but there is no-one I'd pursue and want. But if they did put in someone that I thought 'ohh' and they were bi or gay... I'd love a good chase. You haven't seen my flirty side, but I flirt loads. But it'll be really good for the show. They've never had that."

Charlie's options so far seem limited to cute bi - Brazilian Rodrigo, however new housemates may be added as in previous years.

Grand Theft Auto Goes Gay

Grand Theft Auto - The Ballad of Gay TonyRockstar Games have unveiled The Ballad of Gay Tony, the latest slice of downloadable content for the award-winning computer game Grand Theft Auto IV.

The official Rockstar Games site describes the game as placing the player into the role of Luis Lopez, a “part-time hoodlum and full-time assistant to nightclub impresario Tony Prince (a.k.a. Gay Tony).”

The Ballad of Gay Tony is still some months away and very little known about its core content, the underlying  controversy that seems to follow Rockstar from game to game could grow progressively more pungent as the detail get revelaed.

Gay Muslim Storyline for Eastenders

Syed MasoodEastEnders is to feature a Muslim man embarking upon a gay affair.

Syed Masood, played by Marc Elliott, will fall for openly gay man Christian Clarke (played by John Partridge) and the pair will get it on with an on-screen kiss. The storyline will feature in June.

"I think EastEnders would be doing the programme a disservice if they didn't give a voice to various communities," Elliot told the BBC Asian Network. "I think that's really important because I think London is a very ethnically diverse multicultural place, and EastEnders has a job to reflect that in the storylines it gives people and the characters they have on board."

His character, who joined the cast recently, has been trying to make amends with his family.

Don’t forget your condoms at Birmingham Pride

Don’t forget your condoms at Birmingham PrideHIV and sexual health charity Terrence Higgins Trust is joining forces with other local HIV organisations to remind visitors to Birmingham Pride (23 – 24 May) not to put their sexual health at risk by getting carried away with the party mood.

Staff and volunteers from THT’s centres in Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton, along with organisations AB Plus and Freshwinds, will ride a float in Saturday’s Carnival Parade, promoting the safer sex message and handing out condoms to the crowds lining the parade route. They will also run a stall at the event, where festival-goers can pick up free condoms, along with important advice and information, including where to get tested if they have put themselves at risk.

Ben Watson, Centre Manager for THT in Birmingham, said: “Gay men are one of the groups most affected by HIV in the UK, and – after every Pride festival – we do see a rise in calls to our helpline THT Direct from men who are worried they have put themselves at risk of HIV and STIs. Birmingham Pride is a great event with a real festival atmosphere, and we would encourage people to enjoy themselves; just don’t forget your condoms!”
