Only half a century ago it was illegal to be gay in Britain.Yet today Britain has become one of the most progressive, open-minded nations in the world. Civil partnerships and same sex adoptions no longer invoke the same level of controversy. But what does it mean to be gay and lesbian at the end of the noughties?
Coinciding with London Pride this July, This Is Gonna Sound A Bit Gay is a celebration of sexual identity and an insight into gay rights in 21st Century Britain. With civil rights strengthened and the ongoing debate around nature vs. nurture prevailing, how have our attitudes towards homosexuality and the connotations attached to it changed? Have the social barriers fallen or does prejudice and division still stand? This one-off special airs exclusively on Thursday 2nd July.
Hosted by Current TV’s Graeme Smith, the programme will focus on the journey we undertake as we come to terms with our sexuality, and the choices and compromises we have to consider. Current TV’s cameras follow Graeme as he confronts his past and examines events in his own life that have shaped his sexual identity. Along the way, his mother offers her own candid perspective.
In addition, Graeme calls upon Current TV’s community of young film makers to contribute to this new model of crowd-sourced documentary and share their own experiences. In contrast to Britain’s own more liberal stance on sexuality, three gay Iranian exiles exemplify how the rest of the world is still playing catch up in bridging the gap between straight and gay. Meanwhile, we meet the people who still deem homosexuality a sin for which a cure exists; forcing us to question whether religious and moral intolerance remain, even in these modern times.
We also meet Marina, a teenage girl with two mothers, as she reveals the truth behind her so called unconventional upbringing. Sex and Love on Gaydar looks into the lives of some of the men using gay hook up site gaydar.co.uk. Is it the hub of indecency and deviancy many perceive it to be, or just another way to find a partner in an increasingly fragmented world?
Exposing the modern outlook on sexual identity and exploring gay culture and all its facets, Current TV stands loud and proud and asks whether there is really that big a difference between homo and hetero.
This Is Gonna Sound A Bit Gay airs on Thursday 2nd July at 10pm on Current TV (Sky Channel 183 and Virgin Channel 155).
