Never before available in the UK, Outrageous! is a gay cult classic. It tells the funny and touching story of Robin (Craig Russell) a gay hairdresser with dreams of becoming a female impersonator, and his pregnant, schizophrenic roommate, Liza.
Time Out have called Outrageous! “Consistently very funny in its off-the-wall humour”, while The LA Times declared it “Original, alive and funny”.
Robin’s breathtakingly realistic visual and vocal impressions of legendary divas such as Mae West, Bette Davis, Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand prove an instant hit and as his star rapidly ascends and he moves to New York to realise his dreams. But as Liza falls further into despair and insanity, they find love and support in each other and gradually learn that despite their unconventional lives they are no less sane than those around them.
Directed by Richard Benner, based on a story from "Butterfly Ward" by Margaret Gibson, the critically acclaimed movie was one of the first gay-themed films ever to receive widespread theatrical release in North America. Craig Russell’s fabulous performance as the flamboyant Robin, earned him the award for Best Actor, at the prestigious Berlin Film Festival and his character is responsible for such memorable quotes as “There are three important things in life: sex, movies, and my career. You should think almost entirely about them and never about yourself.” And the famous line “Life isn’t a can of Coke!”.
